Updates to PDF downloads

We’ve updated the detailed study manual and video lesson outline PDFs included in the online seminar to match the spring 2015 layout. You’ll see placeholders for any new readings that we’re still working on. We’ll have these in place promptly and post updates when they’re ready. Thank you.

LFV syllabus changes for spring 2015

Updated 1/4/2015: We’ve got all readings covered in the online seminar!

It’s only November—and though most of you are gearing up to overdose on turkey and holiday chaos—we’re already hard at work updating the LFV online seminar to reflect the spring 2015 syllabus changes. Fortunately, there were not too many!

New Readings Added to Spring 2015 Syllabus

  • LFV-127-15: IASB Staff Paper, Effect of Board Deliberations on the 2013 Exposure Draft Insurance Contracts, July 2014
    • Note: a previous version of this study note was on the fall 2013 syllabus, but it has been revised
  • LFV-818-15: Introduction to Source of Earnings Analysis, Vande Vrede, July 2014
  • ULSG AG38 Valuation Research Report

Modified Versions of Pre-Existing Readings

  • All of GAAP Ch. 3 is now on the syllabus (previous syllabus excluded section 3.11 on sales inducements)
  • LFV-808-15: Fundamentals of the Principle-Based Approach to Statutory Reserves and Risk Based Capital for Life Insurance and Annuities (updated from LFV-808-13 version)

Readings Dropped From Fall 2014 Syllabus

  • FASB Staff Position Paper
  • LFV-817-14 FASB ED (I don’t think anyone will miss this guy!)
  • 1996 Valuation Actuary Symposium: Sources of Profit Statements
    • Even though this was technically dropped by name, this entire study note is now an appendix in LFV-818-15 (the new SOE study note above)

There is plenty in the online seminar to work with in the meantime. Stay tuned for updates, stay warm, and happy holidays!

Looking ahead to spring 2015

If you are currently using the LFV online seminar to prepare for the spring 2015 exam, please note that we will be updating the online seminar over the next few months to reflect any changes to the syllabus. The official syllabus will likely be released by the SOA later this month.

Feel free to continue using all of the currently available fall 2014 materials as you wish. Many of these materials will be relevant to the new syllabus. We will post a more detailed timeline of expected changes later this month. Thank you, and happy holidays!
