Study Schedule – Week 3

In my original “Study Schedule” post, I discussed that it may be helpful to focus on the marketing material first.  I set aside 2 weeks for this material, but it easily could take longer.

If you’ve completed the marketing material, the next section that I recommend is to get an overview of the different product types that are available.  This information can be found in a couple of very LONG study notes.  ILA-D101 and ILA-D105.  Combined, these study notes are over 200 pages, and they take a little while to read.

In my online sessions, I’ve tried to reduce the overlap between these two notes and cover everything in a consistent manner.  The sessions (A.2.1 and A.2.2) are still very long, but they should be a good summary of the material.

Once you’ve covered these two study notes, you can move on to the study note covering Equity Indexed Annuities, ILA-D102.  This note is fairly well-written, but it takes awhile to grasp the concepts if you’ve never seen them before.  Again, I take a slightly different approach in my session (A.2.3) to try to make this more understandable.

In summary, here’s what you can cover in Week 3:

Sessions A.2.1 & A.2.2

     ILA-D101 & ILA-D105

Session A.2.3

     ILA-D102

Enjoy!

New Lesson

A.2.1 Life Products comes in the form of 2 lessons. Jeremy combines two separate study notes to omit redundancies and nicely summarize all you need to know about the various life insurance products. This is a must see!

New Lessons

All lessons for Section E – Marketing are now uploaded and ready for viewing. As well, a combined outline for all of E is also available. This is just a compilation of all the outlines that accompany each lesson.

Also the detailed lesson outline is available in the “Before You Begin” section.

Section E completed

I have completed the final recording for the Marketing section (section E in my outline).  The final session should be posted in the near future.

As indicated in my “study schedule” post, this is a pretty good place to start for this exam.  It covers some of the easier subjects and isn’t too dependent on a lot of product knowledge.  You may want to start with the Overview of Life Insurance and then move to the marketing material.

Happy Studying!

Detailed Outline (with Chapter reference)

If you’ve started working through the online sessions,  you’ll notice that the sessions do not always follow a consistent pattern.  I have tried to organize the syllabus by topic and some of the textbooks jump around quite a bit (especially the introductory chapters).

I have prepared a detailed outline of the syllabus which splits the material into the 5 topics that I have used for my lessons.  The detailed outline shows the specific chapters that are covered so that you can prepare for my recorded sessions without having to actually open the lesson.

A PDF of the outline should be online in the next day or two.  While this outline is relatively final, I do reserve the right to make some tweaks to it as I finalize my lessons.

Please let me know if you have any specific questions about the outline.  Hopefully the outline will be a helpful tool for you study.

Video Flash Card Samples Now Available

We have a few samples of video cards designed to be played on an iPod®. You can go here to download the sample files. Eddie Smith ASA, MAAA (just a FAC away from his FSA and passed course 8IU in 2006) is developing these cards. These will also be made available as PowerPoint slide shows so that you can watch them on your PC. Unlike traditional flash cards, these have the advantage of being totally personalized for you. If you want to combine, split, add music to, add personal notes to them or whatever you can imagine, we can do it.

New Lesson

Lesson E.1.3 (Marketing Info Systems) is now available. That makes 8 lessons that are now available to all registered users. Please contact me with any technical issues.

Study Schedule – Weeks 1-2

Someone made a request recently that I post a study schedule since I am recording the sessions in a different order from the syllabus outline that I developed. That is definitely a fair request, so I will plan to give you an outline of what will be coming up in the recordings so that you can plan accordingly.

Here’s my suggested schedule for the first two weeks of studying:

Overview of Life Insurance — Life Insurance Products & Finance – Chapter 1 (A.1.1)

Marketing – General (E.1)

Life & Health Ins. Marketing (LOMA) Chapters 5-9

Marketing for Actuaries (LIMRA) Chapter 1-3

Marketing – Distribution (E.2)

LOMA 15-17, LIMRA 4-6

Marketing – Customers (E.3)

LOMA 13-14

That’s probably a little more than 2 weeks worth of studying, but at least it gives you a starting point. I’ll plan to post the next schedule in a couple of weeks.

Happy Studying!!
