TIA Study Beta

TIA Study Beta Blog HeroWe are excited to announce The Infinite Actuary’s Study app beta release. We’ve rebuilt our entire interface to create a modern, consistent experience everywhere, using a desktop pc or a mobile device, and either connected to the internet or offline. The technology underlying this new platform will also allow us to release updates and new features more quickly and simultaneously for iOS, Android, and the web.

As always, our focus is on simplifying the studying experience and providing the best tools to help you reach success. TIA Study beta has three major sections: Learn, Review, and (for preliminary exams) Practice.

Learn contains the features from our old video lessons platform and adds

  •  Simplified lesson browsing
  •  New video controls
  •  Ability for users to create and edit lesson bookmarks
  •  Access Lesson handouts from within the app
  •  Quick chapter and lesson progress views
  •  More flexible search results

Review is a complete rethinking of our previous standalone flashcard app, including

  • Daily Inbox that will show you exactly which cards to review using a spaced repetition algorithm
  • Robust and easier to use lesson browsing
  • Easier tagging and tag editing
  • Smart filtering based on card status
  • Ability for users to create and save filters
  • Intuitive progress display

For Preliminary exams, Practice takes over from our old standalone practice app, adding

  • User AI score to measure mastery level
  • Guided practice algorithm expands to mobile platforms
  • Robust and easier to use lesson browsing
  • Smart filtering based on problem status
  • Ability for users to create and save filters
  • Intuitive progress display
  • More detailed history view including Quiz history
  • Coming soon: Sample Exams!

We think this beta version of TIA Study already brings a significantly improved experience to all our users. But this is only the beginning.   We have a long list of new features in the works, including:

  • “Today” view study scheduling system
  • “Progress” section with robust history and mastery measures for chapters and sections
  • “Communication” section, including a complete overhaul of the existing forum.

We have lots of other ideas too, but we also want to hear from you.  What do you want us to add to TIA Study?

Start using the app on the web now and get it on your Android or iOS devices today, and let us know what you think.  As always, thank you for choosing The Infinite Actuary.

New Learn App

learn-bundle

We are happy to announce that we recently released a significant update to our iOS video app, which we are now calling TIA – Learn. You can download it from the App Store, or simply update your existing TIA app through the App Store.

Updates to the new Learn app include:

- Download unlimited videos to your device for offline viewing
- Fully optimized for all iPhone and iPad models
- Stream videos over WiFi or cellular data with option to download videos over WiFi only
- Track your progress as you watch lesson videos
- See all downloaded (offline) videos in one place (like making a “playlist”)
- Update user interface, including more intuitive video controls for skipping forward/back
- Adjust video playback speed on a video-by-video basis and also set a default preference
- Quick access to the discussion forum for each lesson
- Your lesson progress is synced across your devices and the TIA website. If you stop watching a video on the website or app, you can simply resume in that same spot using the website or the app.
- Free samples included without a TIA registration

We also recently updated the Android version of the app to do the same syncing described above. This was a big feature request, and we are happy to deliver it to all platforms. We have more Android updates planned in the future.

Keep in mind the new Learn app is in addition to the newly created Flashcards app that we released in 2017 for iPhone and Android. We plan to continue enhancing both apps and appreciate all of the positive feedback we’ve gotten so far.

A Strategy to Pass Exam P and other CBT Preliminary Exams

Exam P Pass

In my opinion, the difference between a pass and a fail can often come down to test-taking strategy. If you don’t have a good strategy, then you are at a serious disadvantage. The first thing to realize is that for preliminary CBT exams all questions count the same. That means answering the easiest question correctly is worth just as much as answering the hardest question on the exam. Since an easy question is just as likely to show up at the end of the exam as at the start, it is imperative that you give yourself time to attempt every problem on the exam.

Consequently, you must be willing to skip a problem. I realize that the actuarial field is comprised of smart people who may have never skipped questions in their scholastic careers, but I believe that being unwilling to skip a question is one of the best ways to fail your exam. If you read a problem and don’t have a clear picture in your mind of how to solve it, then skip it. If you read a problem and you are confused about the wording of even a single sentence, then skip it. If you read a problem but can’t think of an elegant solution, and the one you have outlined in your head is long and tedious, then skip it. Continue reading

How to handle studying for ST and LC at the same time

STandLCstrategyblog

The CAS split of the 3L exam into exams ST and LC has raised some questions for exam takers. At TIA, we strongly suggest that you not try to double up your actuarial exams by taking two exams in the same sitting, even if you have previously studied and failed one of them in the past. But, while we don’t fully endorse the idea of taking ST and LC together, it certainly seems that these two exams are the most feasible combination to try. Furthermore, we know that there are quite a few students that are going to try it, so we want to provide some guidance along that path. Continue reading
