End-run at the exam!

April 24th, 2009

Just a reminder: the best way to contact me is email: [email protected] or private message at the Actuarial Outpost [campbell].

The Outpost is a good hangout for the final days before the exam, as fellow exam-takers will be in the AFE forum asking and answering questions, discussing strategy, and commiserating.

Speaking of exam strategy, here is a reminder of some of the techniques to use on exam day itself: FSA Exam Advice from a[n ex-]Grader.

Best luck on the exam!

Solutions for Fall 2008 AFE exam up at SOA website

April 7th, 2009

In case you missed it, the SOA recently posted solutions for the Fall 2008 exam here:
Archived exams and solutions page

Keep an eye on the official AFE updates page, just in case. There have been instances in the past where only a week before the exam and update has been made. I’m thinking this won’t happen for this sitting, but you never know.

The syllabus has changed quite a bit since the fall, and the following questions and/or subparts are still relevant, as best as I can tell:

1, 2, 3 (except 3e(ii)), 4, 5a, 6b-e, 7d, 8, 9a-d, 11, 14a-c

I’m including questions that would have different answers because there are new readings on the topic, or that use the previous case study, which has different numbers and different info topics, too.

A caveat on the solutions: there are different levels of detail given for the different questions. For each question, there is the relevant learning objective from the Fall 2008 syllabus as well as a solution. Some solutions have grader comments as well as the source of the material used for the grading outline. Some solutions seem to give almost everything that would be on a grading outline (check out the solution for question 6d; they admit they give more than you would need for full points), and some are more sketchy or minimal. So keep that in mind when reviewing the solutions.

New files for online students

April 2nd, 2009

For those who have the AFE online seminar, go to the course page (http://theinfiniteactuary.com/?page=exams&id=126) and open up the online seminar section. Underneath Section 5, you will see “Live seminar material”. This is a large zipped folder that contains all the pdfs that were sent to the live seminar people.

Files included:
-Case study summary
-Exam tips
-Practice problems (these were given as “homework” during the live seminar)
-Notes by syllabus section — these are essentially an edited-down and reorganized set of notes by topic, as opposed to by reading

You will notice that there are pdfs labeled “annotated” – these contain all the writing on the plain files that I did during the live seminar.
