The LFV online seminar is completely updated for the syllabus changes described below.
The spring/fall 2018 LFV syllabus is now available on the SOA’s LFV page. The syllabus is substantially unchanged, but the page count did grow by a little over 100 pages.
The good news for anyone getting an early start is that these syllabus changes primarily affect material covered in the 5th and final section of the LFV-U online seminar (Section E).
The most notable change is a large new study note (LFV-141-18) covering IFRS 17. This study note weighs in at 140 pages, and is extremely comprehensive, making it feel more like the addition of a textbook than a typical industry article.

New readings added for 2018 (140 pages)
- LFV-141-18: IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts – IFRS Standards Effects Analysis
- Note that “IFRS 17” is the new (and final) name for the new IFRS for insurance contracts
Existing readings that were modified for 2018 (about 12 net pages added to syllabus)
- LFV-102-09: Actuarial Review of Reserves and Other Annual Statement Liabilities
- Previously, the appendices were excluded, but the entire reading is now on syllabus (adds about 10 pages but not any new concepts that were not already covered)
- ASOP 21
- Updated to September 2016 version. There were fairly significant changes to the layout and content of existing pages, and about 2 additional pages were added. We completely revised our online seminar materials to reflect this new version.
- LFV-833-18: Fundamentals of the Principle-Based Approach to Statutory Reserves for Life Insurance
- Updated to 2018 version. There were very minor content changes and no change to page count.
